At Scarcroft Primary, our intent for our maths curriculum is to provide a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. The teaching of maths at Scarcroft encourages children to be resilient problemsolvers. We prepare pupils for the next stage in their learning and to use maths as a tool to assist in daily life. Through aspirational teaching and cross-curricular opportunities, maths is presented as a challenging, exciting, creative and purposeful subject. We base our mathematics around five principles: representation and structure, mathematical thinking, variation, fluency and coherent small steps. We believe in reinforcing key mathematical skills and vocabulary with our children, who then are given opportunities to apply this to reasoning and problemsolving scenarios. We are continually aiming to raise the standards of achievement of all children in order to give them the best possible chance to achieve.
Fluency
We believe that fluency is a key building block to becoming a confident mathematician. To support our pupils in this we do the following:
