Pupils in Key Stages 1 & 2 cover the 4 main aims of the PE curriculum:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • lead healthy, active lives
  • engage in competitive sports and activities

In EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), pupils cover the first four of these aims. In Key Stage 1, pupils are taught to develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They are provided with opportunities to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

In Key Stage 2, pupils are taught to continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They are encouraged to enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other in sporting contexts. The aim is for them to develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

These skills are taught through 2 discrete PE lessons per week, making use of the ‘Real PE’ Scheme of Work for one, or both of the lessons. The children cover activities across the following themes

EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) :

Years 1 & 2:

Games Activities

Active play

Games Activities

Multi-skills activities

Years 3 & 4:

Years 5 & 6:

Games (football, tennis, rounders, netball, badminton and cricket).

Both Key Stages have access to a wide range of resources for the teaching and learning of these activities. There are two halls, the playground and a fenced off grass area on the green outside school which can be used for PE activities. EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and Key Stage 1 have access to soft play and gymnastics equipment as well as a range of balls, beanbags, lily pads and hockey sticks for the teaching of multi-skills and games activities. Key Stage 2 have netballs, footballs and basketballs for games activities and a full class set of hockey sticks, badminton rackets and tennis rackets. There is a wide range of indoor athletics equipment available and a variety of gymnastics apparatus, including wall bars.

Government Sports Funding

The Government has made a pledge to provide schools with additional funding for the next few years to support high quality Sports provision in schools as part of the 2012 Olympic Legacy. You can read our plans for this academic year in the attached Action Plan.

Our Parents have told us that they think Sports provision is very important and we have made huge efforts over the last few years to increase the amount of competitive sport and opportunities for out-of-hours sports activities. As a result, we have used a significant chunk of this years's funding to buy into the York Sports Partnership: this allows our school to take part in a wide range of informal games and competitive matches across York in sports such as Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Tag-Rugby and Football. Our teams have achieved a high degree of success in Hockey, Football and Tennis in particular in the last two years.

Our other main focus has been on swimming: we have used the funding to provide specialist training for those teachers involved in teaching swimming in Lower KS2. As a result, they now have accredited certificates and are better equipped to teach our pupils to a higher standard.
